The Monmouth Civic Chorus has been named the 2008 recipient of the Chorus America/ASCAP Alice Parker Award. Given to only one chorus in North America each year, the award recognizes a chorus for programming significant recently composed music that expands the mission of the chorus and challenges the chorus's audience in a new way.

The award was presented at the Chorus America National Conference in Denver, Colorado on June 14. MCC’s Artistic Director, Dr. Mark Shapiro, received the award and $1000 on behalf of the Chorus.

The Monmouth Civic Chorus received the award for its March 2007 world premiere of Jorge Martin’s Stronger Than Darkness, a Cuban-American opera in concert. "What a tremendous and unexpected honor for The Monmouth Civic Chorus. This ASCAP award acknowledges the passion and commitment of MCC's dedicated singers, hard-working Board, loyal supporters and fearless audience," Dr. Shapiro said.
